The Sugarcubes: Life’s Too Good

Debut outing from Bjork and her Icelandic buddies, it's wild, tattered, unkempt, vivacious, free-spirited, often better-in-concept and sometimes best heard with ears squinted. The bogus moments are the ones where someone but Bjork is singing, the bloke vocalist and trumpet man really stinks out the joint like a fart through an airhorn. The songs can also border on glum, dingy and completely irritating. 3rd track Birthday is where it really takes flight. The band hit a sweet spot and Bjork's vocal cords contort like a trapezing sensuality ostrich in overdrive. It's like a beautiful, compact visage of the rest of her future solo career. There are good moments throughout despite the hurriedly spun, mangy nature of most of it. Final track In Rhythm and Sorrow is some screamy rockabilly that doesn't quite live up to it's title.
